Dental Hygiene
DID YOU KNOW?Plaque begins to physically bond to tooth surfaces just 24 hours after being exposed to food, which is why it is important to brush and floss after each meal.
ProphylaxisThis is a general cleaning that is performed by the hygienist for patients who have no periodontal disease, or gingival (gum) issues.
MaintenancePeriodontal Maintenance is a cleaning service that is provided once a patient has been through tissue (gum) therapy including hand scaling and root planing. This service is to be performed every three to four months.
Scaling and Root PlaningThis is a service that is associated with periodontal disease. It is performed under local anesthesia, and separates the entire mouth into four quadrants. One to two quadrants are usually treated at the same appointment. Depending on the patient's history and home care, this service may only be needed once in their lifetime.
DebridementThis service is usually needed when a patient hasn't been to the dentist for a professional cleaning in a long time. Plaque, calculus and food debris can accumulate above the gum line and is removed by an ultrasonic scaler. This allows the tissue to heal. and the patient is appointed about four weeks later for a follow up evaluation. Any further treatment is determined at that time. |
